Night Noodle Markets

The Night Noodle Markets in Hyde Park are undoubtedly Sydney’s most famous annual food markets. Every well-known Asian eatery sets up camp in Hyde Park for two weeks in October as part of Good Food Month. The result is a sea of food-lovers pacing the length of the 50+ stalls trying to choose between dumplings, mee goreng and ramen hotdogs. Our suggestion is not to choose and just make sure you are really, REALLY hungry. You must have a game plan for the Noodle Markets. Be sure to turn up early and to bring a picnic rug. The next step is to jump in the queues as early as possible for any of the popular dishes. The Singleton Whiskey Bar is a great place to warm up and the perfect first stop even for unseasoned whiskey drinkers. Sydney has gone bao-crazy and both Mr Bao and Bao Stop can take equal first place for queue length. Someone more patient then I best decide which bao is superior. I can, however, recommend the soft, pillowy Braised Pork Belly Gue Bao from Bao Stop. If meat on a stick is more your thing than check out the Daniel San stall with chicken, pork and beef skewers. The Korean Twist Potato is also a must-try for anyone who loves salty Korean food. Old favourites like Mamak’s roti are still pulling large crowds and we reminded ourselves why— there is nothing quite like this airy Malaysian roti. We also dug into a box of their spicy Mee Goreng (yum). If you are after something lighter I can suggest Subcontinental’s Chicken Tikka Skewer with Coleslaw & Spiced Yoghurt on Roti. Dessert is no easier decision. If you want to stick with the Asian theme, we can suggest Harajuku Gyoza’s Banana Nutella Gyozas. Messina is up to its usual wizardry and Black Star Pastry is serving up their faithful Strawberry Watermelon Cake. Be sure to stop by before the Noodle Markets finish up on the 25th.
